  Abstract

Among medical specialties, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics are traditionally considered primary care disciplines. Within the scope of service provision, a wider integration from the perspective of community needs is needed in the present times. Primary care providers also include nurse practitioners. Several subspecialties, such as preventive cardiology, also intersect the disciplinary boundaries of primary care.

  Primary Care Specialties Top

Among medical specialties, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics are traditionally considered primary care (PC) disciplines. Within the scope of service provision, a wider integration from the perspective of community needs is needed in the present times. PC providers also include nurse practitioners. Several subspecialties, such as preventive cardiology, also intersect the disciplinary boundaries of PC. Family medicine is a major PC discipline. Family medicine is a clinical medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. It provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and family across all ages, genders, diseases, and parts of the body. PC is therefore a very important junction for any public health service.

PC is also often called the port of health care for individuals and communities. PC is patient-focused general care for adults, children, and families. A person's PC provider is typically the first one a patient turns to for diagnosis and treating common illnesses. In contrast to PC, primary health care is a whole-of-society approach to health that aims equitably to maximize the level and distribution of health and well-being by focusing on people's needs and preferences, both as individuals and communities. PC teams provide nonselective comprehensive care across the lifespan and take a whole-person approach to health and wellness.

Post-COVID Pandemic Health Care and Primary Care Top

The first year of the COVID pandemic has been an unprecedented public health challenge. The potential solutions are looking bright at the horizon. Due to stringent lockdown and disruption of services, the interface of patient care has dramatically transformed during the COVID pandemic. Access and provision of health care are rapidly evolving in the new environment. Care of illnesses within the community, long-term management of chronic diseases, addressing multimorbidity, and the general health system all have stretched beyond imagination. New thinking and perceptions have evolved. PC is no exception where >90% of the care takes place. As the whole world and mode of business will change during the post-COVID period, PC providers and the services also need to innovate and evolve with the transformation happening around.

  JPSC Call for Action Top

JPSC is a multidisciplinary journal covering PC specialties. It has been established to facilitate research, education, training, and practice of PC specialties. PC is a melting point of several specialties and subspecialties within the community setting. JPSC calls all PC specialties including family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine, general obstetrics, gynecology, and public health to develop scholarship and professional cooperation with an ambition of optimizing the overall health-care delivery system.
